It's almost the end of third year and I'm not sure I can remember what a good nights sleep means! I guess that might explain why I'm becoming more and more drawn to people dozing off on public transport and in various waiting rooms- I've got a rapidly growing collection of these peaceful people in the back of books, on receipts and coach tickets.

Letterpressing

I've spent a week in a room at the bottom of uni with no windows, just lots of tiny lead letters and plenty of picas.

However, after setting the text some weeks ago now, I was finally ready to print and finished 1500 pages this morning. The idea is to print these condensed books that I've been chopping about and perforate and block them together so people can take a condensed War and Peace or maybe an Animal Farm away with them to read when they don't have much time.

It's by far the biggest print run I have done in letterpress. I think I'm going to quite miss working down there. Perhaps I might have to direct the next project that way too....

Pick Me Up

Time for the next installment of the Pick Me Up contemporary graphic art fair.

To be honest, I'm not sure I was drawn to much of the work in it. My favourite, however, and most useful to my current condensed book project was Stefanie Posavec's information design (above image shows the splitting up of books into chapters then words). It was worth the fiver alone just to be introduced to this single piece.

Gearing up for the big print run, after speaking to Simon about the project I settled on 60gsm Bible Paper to letterpress the pages of my condensed books onto. This is it cut to size, above.

Using this stock means each page can be torn off the blocks easily and can exist as something not too precious. It's an idea stemming from the fact that when paperback novels first became widely available and cheap, readers on ocean liners would sometimes read a book tearing out each page as they go and chucking it over board.

Spring has sprung!

The lovely Joanna at Oxygen Boutique invited Lucie and me back to brighten up the window in time for spring. We wanted to cheer up the street so we thought nothing is cheerier than a field of daisies- so that's what we went for. Five hours, four pens and two dead arms later, this is the result. Go pop down to Eastcastle Street and have a look, especially when the sun is shining!

And the daisies continue on the inside too!

Oh how very, very, VERY excited this delivery has made me. The rather shifty looking bundles, above, contain 9 cut to size acrylic pieces that now await to hopefully be turned into a glorious collection of books.

Project problem solving

I'm having some issues about trying to bind a one page book for my current project. Rather kindly, after contacting book binder/artist Simon Goode, he offered to meet and discuss some of my concerns over gold blocking covers and binding in general. I left the meeting rather inspired and, after a lengthly discussion, I've decided it's perhaps for the best I settle on printing an edition of my letterpress texts rather than worry about the binding as of yet.

Stumbled across this sweet gallery/bookshop space along the beach called Castor & Pollux, currently showcasing 'Burning Love' by Jonny Hannah. Oh i wish I didnt have so many holes in my pocket and could buy some of the lovely things....

And some general Brighton pics (the ones that survived Asda's horrid photo service anyway)....

And it's pretty fair to say that these gluten free cupcakes are a good excuse to return back...tucked away in the lanes, Angel Food Bakery may make me a fat person yet.

John Stezaker

Took a little time out for inspiration today- I needed a free exhibition to go to and so I headed to the Whitechapel Gallery for the John Stezaker exhibition. And oh my, what fabulous images there were. The personal highlight was the wall of tiny people cut from photographs; people unknowingly participating in a photograph somewhere in the distance. Lovely stuff indeed.

Justified type setting

Just to be clear, I have never set any amount of type longer than 3 lines and not left aligned.

However, what better thing could I try and do in my final year than attempt to master the art of justified type in the letterpress workshop? It has taken a few intense weeks to set 3 of my hybrid books that I have been working on but I am so very happy with the result. Now all there is to do is source some top quality paper for some lush prints.

As the result of the second brief, its created around a basic idea that knowledge gives power. So wearing these booky soled shoes, you can tower over others with the new found knowledge you have!

Kinetica Art Fair....

Earlier in the week I volunteered at this years Kinetica Art Fair at P3 North London, mostly helping paint a lot of walls black at first. Then over the weekend I volunteered as an invigilator for the feature exhibition- so I've spent a lot of time this week being surrounded by some pretty mindblowing pieces.....

Carlo Bernardini was a certain highlight (above) and was where I spent most of my Sunday. The rather eerie animal skulls by Christiaan Zwanikken on the way in were also fantastic. But I think the drawing machines by Tim Lewis were my favourite pieces- they were just so clever......

And these end stops are fantastic by Fiona Banner. She has literally pulled full stops of the page by enlarging them and making them into a three dimensional object. FAB.

So after getting the dissertation all bound up and ready to go, we thought we'd treat ourselves to a nice calm day at the Tate Modern to see the Gabriel Orozco exhibition. It's so damn good that I invested in the book. The snooker table really should be made a permanent feature at the Tate....

James Turrell

Well this is odd. Literally turning up to an exhibition with no former knowledge of the exhibitor is living life on the edge I know but hey sometimes thats how it goes.

Anyhow this James Turrell was a good tip-off and although the main attraction was fully booked, the other half of it was an odd Matrix-style experience with 8 others walking shoeless into a space filled with coloured light and being disorientated entirely. Marvellous.

Man Rays cat

This character is a result of the Hybrids project. I made rayograms in the darkroom using feathers and cat fur and then scanned these in to make this stop motion character silhouette.

Well done to everyone in IMI! Had a pretty cracking show of our work in progress which will be up in the Well Gallery in LCC until Friday. I feel like I'm coming to a solid final piece from this Hybrid brief, although I have struggled a little. These animals are based on double exposed images in photography and using them as a base to make a solid 3D object out of.

I guess these outcomes look a bit more on the illustration/art side of things but I've found I'm rather fond of making models. Maybe I'll make more.

Student DEMOlition

Sugar cave - journey to the center of the cake!

So this week, Lucie & I offered our stitching and general all rounder skills to help art directors Emma Rios & Cecilia Carey create an actual real life, full size sugar cave with Bompas&Parr as a part of this years London Fashion Week. Inside, the work of designers Tour da Force, House of Flora, Sveda Mutlu and Aase was pedestaled by the sugar formations and the sugar coated floor!

Sponsered by Silver Spoon, the cave is a vision of how the surroundings would appear were you to be shrunk to the size of a single grain of standard table sugar (0.3-0.5mm). At this size the sugar crystals themselves can be seen.....

Oh, it was sticky work getting the oversized crystals in place and oh so tempting to stick your tongue to when no one was looking....

I'll be adding more photos as the week goes on!

Windy window display...

Autumn already! And time for window number 2 in the lovely Oxygen boutique in central London.

The theme? Simple; Autumn. Nothing too glum mind. Well Lucie & I got thinking and decided absolutely nothing beats flying kites in the sun on a blustery autumnal afternoon. Nothing! So we decided to try and spread this joy through our inky creations and that's what we went with......

We reckon the clothes look absolutely amazing against it, theres some really lovely pieces in this seasons selection!

The deadline soon creeped up on us to have it looking good and installed by 2nd September and ready for the boutiques special evening of DJ's, ultra blue cocktails, cupcakes and late night shopping.

THE BIG DAY.

So, installation day is finally upon us after days of cutting painting and inking. Took some pics of us working on the installation on what must have been the hottest day of the year! There's certainly a technique to using a staplegun on a stepladder...

And here is the final outcome- looking pretty jazzy! Oxygen wanted to display their festival wear in a fun way and we think this pretty much does the job :D it should be up for the rest of the summer now, so pop down to Eastcastle Street (off Oxford St., past Urban Outfitters) and take a look! Me & Lucie can now kickback and begin our summer....

Off Harper Road class exhibition

I wouldn't even know where to begin in terms of describing how busy the whole of our class have been this week/month with preparations for the Off Harper Road event.

We were so lucky for our class to be able to exhibit a site specific work on the estate in the same rooms that Turner Prize nominee Roger Hiorns exhibited Seizure last year.

So we cleaned them up a bit, gave it a bit of love and split into 6 groups.

Our group went for turning an entire flat into a Camera Obscura- paint a room black and pop a hole in the window right?

Well, there was quite a bit more than that involved but this is the result from Thursdays evening- we couldn't have asked for more sunshine! Turned into such a beautiful experience- I still can't fully comprehend it, and seeing someone walk across the ceiling upside down is just crazy!

First ever website! For this evenings exhibition, each group was asked to individually make a brief webpage to illustrate their exhibit. We worked together creating a style and then went about making it work. MARVEL HERE! OK, it's pretty basic but hey it works- Freeway has got to be the best web program made surely? I feel an addiction coming on for the summer....

Printing Crazy Ladies

It's certainly been a while since I've been in the ol' screen printing room but alas, i guess its like riding a bike. But with a squeegie. Anyhow, me and Anita are the official printers of the exhibition posters so we exposed the screens a couple of days back and set about printing the design (by Patrick) in A2 colour and A3 black&white. I guess we got a bit carried away, but we had enough to take around the colleges and plaster them across Camberwell & St.Martins to get them trendy kids down to Harper Road on Thursday. I think the prints are pretty striking- the identity is based on the aerial view of the Harper Road site.

Obscura time

So with less than 2 weeks to go for the exhibition, it's probably best we got practising on some camera obscura techniques for our intended installation. I took advantage of the sunniest day of the year by spending it in a pitch black room watching the outside world projected upside down on my bedroom walls. Created quite simply by blacking the window out with paper and puncturing it with a hole for the 'lens', the results were more exciting than i possibly imagined. These are the best pictures I could take under the conditions. I cannot begin to express how excited I am for setting up in the exhibition space next week! Fingers crossed for bright sun though.....

Sara de Bondt cutting aid...

Going from current projects, it might only be a matter of time til im immune to paper cuts.

The best part of today was spent in Sara de Bondt's studio helping her cut away at over 130 carefully planned book pages to make the initial model of a book she has designed. After 5 hours of continuous scalpelness we were lucky enough to still, miraculously, have all our fingers still in tact. Above is a photo of the early sample.

Culture vulturing

Some sketches inspired by the van Doesburg exhibition I went to at the Tate Modern. I'm quite a fan of the graphic shapes that construct the models of buildings, the above is a sketch from a particular angle and then also worked into on the reverse of the page. My sketchbook paper is a bit flimsy and ink shows through so I thought it could be good to use this to my advantage. A little bit of this technique allowed me to apply shading to the right doodle of the composition of Nicolas Werkman's letterpress Chimneys (1923).

The typography parts of the exhibition were most appealing for me. It was great to see some groundbreaking uses of typography during that era and it's no surprise that so many modern designers are hooked on that style.

Red Door at Greenwich

Last week Lucie claimed she'd stumbled across mine and her's future. It turned out 'our future' is hidden down a quaint market street in Greenwich, and could easily be mistaken for Brighton's Lanes. Anyhow, it turned out to be a beautiful tearoom selling gluten free handmade cakes and handmade jewellery. The owner, Kate, kindly agreed to meet up with us to discuss how she got to Red Door and had plenty of good sensible advice for me and Lucie. We took a few shots afterwards....

So to cure any chance of boredom setting in over the easter hols, I helped my ma back home with dressing the local charity shop windows. She regularly sorts out the windows and I like to go help when I'm home. It might be obvious that this week's theme was St.George's day so cue a frantic red and white search throughout the whole of the charity shop! The icing on the top was the green dragon :)

Papercuts Galore

I have been recovering from some pretty severe papercuts that were a result of this brief. Fedrigoni papers launched a competition to help entice the public up into their showroom in Farringdon. I thought I'd take their papers and create a paper wig trail around that part of the city leading up into their showroom. The idea is for them to be hung in widows of shops and to encourage you to try them on and have your little photo taken :)

Letterpress maps

This is a more abstract notion of a desire line using letterpress. It started as my desire to go against the 18pt grid and create a curve. However this soon became apparent that it was bloody difficult so I decided to raise the letterpress blocks themselves up to print level. This print shows the grid structure to creating a curve on an 18pt grid.

Below is the reverse of the blocks, the texture of which lends the print an abstract element perhaps an 'aerial map' of fields, or a golf course.

Then I observed it's a hot spot for learner drivers to practice their 3point turns...although i'm a little doubtful a learner could make this much of a mess...

It seemed to go ok, although students really aren't v.generous with their money, especially on a Monday morning :) Being as this is our 4th stall together we're really getting into the swing of things and decided more t-shirts and bags are gunna be top of the easter to-do list....hurrah :D

Jittery Crittery

This is a little illustration pulled out of a recent sketchbook. The general theme was to portray charity shop volunteers through a set of illustrations using quotes from them that seemed to pop-up quite a lot in the back room whilst I was working there.

At the end of last year I was happy enough to help illustrator, Emma Rios again. This time I spent quite an intensive day with her in helping hand paint the backdrop for central London club, the Hospital. The general theme of the night was Avent Garden. We painted on her design of an old-fashioned curtained stage for the backdrop by hand using indian ink on brown paper. It seemed to go down a treat when the performers took to the stage in front of it :)

Matchbox experimentations

And further development from the pinhole experiments, I played around with exposing panoramic images directly onto film. Below are some panoramic shots of London.

Above is the edge of a pinhole photo that I think makes such an intriguing image. The tiny cardboard fibers around the edge create their own landscape. This could spur an interest in collecting the edges of photographs rather than the main image itself...

Exploring the Frame

All I can say about this project is I got carried away making pinhole cameras. 43 in all to be precise...

This included 2 matchbox pinholes and 40 mini pinholes made from 35mm plastic canisters. It took a while to fill each with light sensitive photo paper and seal them all. It also took a morning to develop each indiviaully in the darkroom.

However the results were surprisingly sharp, better than I expected.

Urgh, I've been having internet difficulties meaning this blog has suffered from neglect :(

Here's a brief heads up on what I've been up to.....

I submitted this for the e-stings competition that e4 do on a yearly basis...

I think I was feeling in a somewhat dark mood when I was working on this, there's something a bit eerie about it.

Anyhow, this week I was left momentarily speechless when I found out that I had been chosen as one of 15 out of over 800 entries for the competition! The others can all be found on www.e4.com.

So these 15, with mine included, will now be part of the e4 stings over the coming year, wedged in between episodes of friends and hollyoaks! I am darn excited about this alone, but now there is a second brief for the 15 finalists which I shall be starting work on pretty instantly....

Inky fingers

These illustrations are the result of me rediscovering my trusty nib and ink. It's a technique I'm very fond of; so much detail can be included and shading can be gradually built up.

I designed these specifically for cards to sell on yesterdays stall, printing each onto brown paper as the one above.

The start of summer....

Okay, so stall numero 2!

Me & Lucie didn't have to break our backs as much as we did last time in the run up to this stall as we had what was left from the UAL Summer Fete. New additions included Lucie's seaside lino cuts, some of my inked greetings cards (which I will post up) and a bowl of free Haribo sweets :). We also had the addition of a photographer (mister Leo Cox) who happily snapped his way through the day :D

So yesterday we managed to haul our 2 large boxes of joyfulness to the other side of London to set up our stall at the Craftwerk fete at St Aloysius Social Club in Euston. Quite a good turnout in general, but sold less than we had expected which we decided was totally due to the effect of bad weather on peoples moods and the credit crunch...of course.

However, still made enough to treat ourselves to a nice alcoholic beverage afterwards.

As it stands, our next planned stall will be at the same venue in November time when hopefully people will have the Christmas spirit in their bones and will be more willing to part with their cash :D

Well, this stall being over officially marks the beginning of the summer break for me, so now cue time to catch up on the reading pile and begin the summer brief- I'll be posting up anything else that comes up over the summer as well.

The first stall......

Well after weeks of sewing, screenprinting panicing & preparation the day finally came! Here's the entire stall with both mine and Lucie Maslin's creations :)

The craft stalls were selected to be part of the 'University of the Arts London Alumni Summer Fete' held at the parade ground at Chelsea College. Most of the other stall holders were graduates with their own small companies so there was a really vast range of work. And we soon became aware we were the only LCC-er's to many peoples surprise...

We did okay on the day, sold more than one item anyway as a certain someone had predicted :P Turns out theres a few Bowie fans and stamp fans out there- a rather niche market i guess. Spread the word a little about the lovely cut-out screenprinters as well hopefully :)

Came away with a profit (enough to buy a steak each and Daim cake to celebrate with in the evening :D), but have enough left over to plan for an actual craft fair. That seemed to be the problem on the day- the majority of the people were distracted more by the free stone carving and screenprinting activities going on at the same time. However, we met some lovely people, traded some good advice and shared a lot of random banter....

All in all, a good way to spend a summer's day.

So due to the fact we seem to not want to rest this summer, me and Lucie's next plan is to have a stall at the Euston-based 'Craftwerk' on 1st August. Plenty of time to make more things before then, and maybe time to put our feet up somewhere along the way.....

V&A Friday Late- Illustration Evening

This past week has been soo hectic but bloody marvellous.....

Firstly, ad most excitingly, I have been helping the ever so lovely illustrators Emma Rios and Dan Price with their piece for this months Friday Late at the Victoria & Albert museum. Being involved has been so much fun, and quite a bit of work helping to dress the set of their 'Chip Chop' workshop, mainly involving a lot of cutting, sticking and painting!

Also, on the evening, some illustrations I submitted for a live animation event were projected in the main entrance of the V&A..... These illustrations were animated on the night by such a talented group of jotta.com people - The Moving Picture Company. I only have pictures, but am hoping that I will be sent the animated images sometime soon so I will post them up hopefully in zee near future....

It was actually amazing to see them animate a static illustration and impose it onto a hand-made set which was then projected on the screen. These are the original illustrations, the basic brief was 'After Dark' -basically to draw anything from the V&A collection as it could be seen from a childs point of view. I went for the freakish monsters...

So I've spent a lot of time trying to find decent plain totes to print on.

And then I spent a lot of time once again in the print room at uni trying to print decently onto them....

It's been a while since a post, mostly due to the fact that I've either been hibernating in the screen-print studio or running off on some mission here or there...

Here's a snippet of some prints I've been working on, which came from a day workshop in IMI a few weeks back.

Backtracking this past week...

Sunday 8th

Went for a derive around East London, starting at Columbia Road flower market. Stumbled across a wonderful paper craft shop in which the window display was a mammoth roll of paper which had been delicately cut out to create a almost paper doily like image.

Monday 9th & Tuesday 10th

Both studio days- IMI and Typo.

Taking some emotions of how we felt on our derives of the past week, we developed typographic A0 pieces on Tuesday's studio day. My chosen words were Fake, Collision and Stumbled. I went with the collision, eventually becoming collide which eventually became a wall of newsprint ideas.....

which then became A0 at Service point. This has definitely set me off into the correct direction for the rest of the project. The initial ideas were done in the studio using hand-drawn techniques and a seemingly never ending credit value on the photocopier. From these, I was then able to work on Illustrator to create the final piece (left).

For Interactive Moving Image I've been working on the Make Sound Visible brief. It has been quite interesting as I start to research the effect of silence, and obviously that has led me to John Cage's 4'33 piece. I've just been playing with the idea of people reacting to sound or in this case, noise. Unfortunately, there's problems uploading the videos atm but I hope to create a whole alphabet of people drawing the letters whilst exposed to sudden loud bursts of noise. The results so far have been better than I could have initially expected.

After moving image on Monday, waited around for a talk by Anne Odling-Smee as part of the 'Changing Face of Letterpress' presentations at LCC. She spoke about her work and a book she had produced about the use of craft in Graphic design. An eye-opener, although I enjoy working better by hand anyway.

This morning we were introduced to work by silversmith, Rod Kelly. he spoke about his techniques and his clients- the most impressive perhaps being asked to design the back of a £2 coin in 2006. A nice variation to the PPD lectures. And for the rest of today, I have spent more time editing the Make sound visible final piece- the final film is done and safely on a DVD. Being my first time using Final Cut Pro, it's fair to say that I am fairly proud of what I have achieved......although, I do definitely need to familiarize myself with it a lottt more.

So I figured I'm nearly 20 now so it's time to sort my life out (an early midlife crisis?)
